Adjusting to your Multifocal Spectacles
Thank for purchasing your new Multifocal spectacles. We are sure you will be very happy, as you have now purchased the most convenient style of lens available.
When you first start wearing your new spectacles, they may feel very strange for a while even if you have worn this type of lens before or there hasn’t been much change in your prescription.
Multifocals are a complicated lens due to the fact that it is one lens which changes in power as you move your eyes up and down. Thus, we generally say it can take you up to six (6) weeks to fully adapt to your new lenses, especially if you have had significant changes in things such as your prescription, frame shape & size or even Multifocal lens design. But even small changes can still feel odd for a while.
When we first dispensed your the lenses, we would have told you about “peripheral distortion”. This is where your vision will be blurred if you move you eyes, rather than your head - left or right to see. Multifocals have a clear vision channel which is where you will look through. As a result of this “peripheral distortion”, over the next six (6) weeks you may experience a few side effects, such a dizziness, seasickness, headaches etc. This doesn’t always occur, but if it does, unfortunately that is normal.
Over the course of the next six (6) weeks it may be necessary for you to come back to the store two (2) or three (3) times to have some minor adjustment to your frame. This can make significant improvements on the comfort of your glasses and vision. This is normal, so do not be alarmed.
Unfortunately, it is impossible for us and you to ascertain whether or not your spectacles are perfect by spending a few minutes in store with you. This is where it is up to you to go home and persevere and note any issues you may have, so when you come back for adjustment, you can accurately describe any issues you may be having.
The key to adjusting to your Multifocals is perseverance and a positive attitude. Remember, we were never designed to wear spectacles and so whilst they will certainly help your vision, they will not give you back your sight to what is was prior to wearing spectacles.
It is very important that you wear your spectacles correctly in order to get the maximum value out of them. Make sure that when you are looking around you always look straight, and not out of the sides of the lenses. If you have an accident with them and your frame becomes bent or out of shape, this can affect your vision, so come in and see us immediately to have this rectified.
If you are one of the few that doesn’t require any further attention after you have collected your spectacles, then you are one of the lucky ones! At Visual Eyes Optical, we want to make sure you are 100% satisfied with you new spectacles, so if you have any issues, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
